Are You a Student or Early Career Psychologist? This is why you should become an OPA member

September 08, 2025

Investing in Your Future from the Start

Joining a professional association early in your career is one of the best ways to answer these questions and gain a foothold in your professional community. For those in Ontario, the Ontario Psychological Association (OPA) offers a wealth of resources, relationships, and tools tailored specifically to students and early-career psychologists.

Why Join a Professional Association Now?

It’s easy to think that membership in a professional association is something to consider “later,” after licensure or when your career feels more stable and you are more financially stable. However,  the earlier you engage, the more you’ll benefit. Student and early-career members of the OPA gain access to valuable professional development opportunities, mentorship, and a vibrant community of psychologists and psychological associates working in diverse areas.

Joining now means investing in your long-term success, not just for your first job, but for your growth across the span of your career.

Tangible Benefits of OPA Membership

As a student or early-career professional, you might be wondering what the real return on investment is. Here's what membership includes:

  • Mentorship: OPA's mentorship program pairs students and early-career members with experienced psychologists. Whether you need career advice, academic guidance, or someone to talk through tough decisions with, having a mentor can be transformative.

  • Networking: OPA hosts in-person and virtual events, including coffee chats, panel discussions, and section meetings. These gatherings are excellent opportunities to meet potential employers, research collaborators, or future colleagues.

  • Continuing Education (CE) Credits: The OPA offers workshops, webinars, and conferences that provide CE credits at discounted rates for members. If you do not know yet, if you join OPA, you will soon experience the top-tier presenters and clinical topics during the lunch and learn series offered throughout the year. These professional educational sessions are essential for meeting licensing requirements and staying current in your field.

  • Access to OPA Community Groups: Join our communities focused on your area of interest,  whether it’s clinical psychology, neuropsychology, school psychology, or emerging fields like digital mental health. These groups are great for staying informed and contributing to important conversations.

  • Professional Consultation: Also, through the OPA communities, you will have the opportunity to observe professional consultation exchanges regarding difficult or complex cases or how to respond to professional practice matters or licensing questions. You can offer your perspective if you wish, and you can consult when needed.  All of this is part of the OPA fee.

  • Advocacy: OPA advocates for the role of psychologists and psychological associates in Ontario’s health care system. As a member, you’re part of that voice, helping shape the future of your profession.

  • Career Planning Resources: Members receive access to tools and guidance around career development, practice building, supervision, and licensure. This includes templates, articles, and community insights.

Supporting the Public and the Profession

OPA does more than support members; it supports the broader Ontario community. One of its most important public services is Askforhelptoday.ca, a confidential referral platform that connects people with licensed psychologists and psychological associates in their area. As an OPA member, you can choose to be listed on this service, making it easier for potential clients to find you based on your specialties, availability, and location.

This service not only helps Ontarians access timely support, but it also increases visibility for early-career professionals and strengthens the public’s understanding of psychology as a vital health service.

Student and Membership Levels

OPA offers flexible membership categories that reflect where you are in your training:

  • Student Members: For those enrolled in undergraduate or graduate psychology programs.

  • Psychological Associate Members: For individuals completing a master’s program and working toward licensure.

  • Early Career Members: For those within their first four years of autonomous practice.

Each level includes adjusted pricing and benefits that are designed to meet you where you are, financially and professionally. The association also provides discounted event pricing and access to job boards and placement services.

How to Get Involved

OPA is not just a passive service. It’s a professional community. The more you participate, the more value you’ll receive. Some great ways to get involved early include:

  • Volunteer on a Committee: Support projects related to advocacy, ethics, equity, or education.

  • Join a Section or Interest Group: Contribute your perspective and stay on the pulse of evolving research and practice.

  • Write or Present: Submit a blog or speak at a student panel. Sharing your experience builds visibility and leadership.

  • Attend Networking Events: From virtual mixers to formal Q&A sessions, OPA events are designed for connection and learning.

OPA is currently expanding its student section with peer-led initiatives, virtual discussion forums, and new tools to help students navigate academic life and transition into the workforce.

The Power of Community

While academic training is essential, it is often focused on content mastery — not career navigation. This is where a strong professional community makes a difference. Joining OPA offers you access to real-world insights that aren’t always found in textbooks: how to find a supervisor, how to bill ethically, how to advocate for your role in a health care team, and how to manage the emotional demands of helping others.

Psychology can sometimes feel like a solitary path, especially in graduate school or early independent practice. Being part of OPA helps you stay connected, seen, and supported.

Long-Term Professional Development

Membership is not just about getting through school or landing your first job. It’s about developing a sustainable, fulfilling career. OPA supports your long-term growth by offering resources at every stage, from student to retiree.

The association’s advocacy work also helps ensure that the value of psychology is recognized within Ontario’s broader health care system. By joining OPA, you contribute to shaping that future, while benefiting from the protections and recognition that advocacy brings.

You Belong Here

If you're passionate about psychology and committed to growing in this field, you belong in the OPA community. Whether you’re just discovering your specialization or preparing for licensure, the OPA is here to help you make informed choices, connect with mentors, and take confident steps toward your future.
