Using emotion theory and chair-work scripts for transformation in individual therapy

June 03, 2026

Description: This workshop will introduce simple theory and efficient emotion-focused interventions to support transformation in individual therapy, including but not limited to the differentiation of blended emotions, the use of energy to transform maladaptive emotions, and using chair-work scripts specific to self-criticism and emotional avoidance. Time permitting, underlying theory and demonstration of a third and final chair-work script relating to the cultivation of assertive anger - and resolution vis–vis a primary attachment figure will be presented.

Informed by theory and techniques from emotion- and somatic-focused therapy models, participants will be provided with opportunities to engage with theory experientially, as well as to observe interventions in action via video demonstration. Resources and scripts will also be provided to support the integration of the material in one’s practice. Participation can be active or passive and no prior training required.

Learning objectives:

  • Apply emotion-focused interventions in individual therapy
  • Describe theories for the development of self-critical and self-interruption processes
  • Explain emotion-focused change mechanisms

Join Dr. LaFrance for this introductory, experiential workshop introducing emotion-focused chair-work scripts clinicians can integrate directly into individual therapy.
