FYM-How to Repair Sleep When CBTi Fails Putting Trauma to Sleep

April 14, 2026

Presented by: Drs. Jaan Reitav and Celeste Thirlwell

Objectives

1.Understand that sleep intervention begins with a review of the consistency and stability of sleep patterns using the consensus sleep diary

2.Understand how to prescribe the initial key interventions of CBTi: i) consistent wake times, ii) limited time in bed, and iii) active transition into sleep

3.When sleep disruption does not respond to these interventions, know how to evaluate the three “enemies of sleep”: i) sleep apnea, ii) physical (body) distress, and iii) autonomic dysregulation

4.Be able to prioritize each of these to develop a plan for intervention

About the Presenters:

Dr. Jaan Reitav is a Clinical, Rehabilitation and Health Psychologist with over forty years of experience in treating sleep disturbances. He won the OPAs Best Doctoral Dissertation Award in 1984 for his work on Dreaming and Psychological Defenses. He is past president of the OPA’s Section on Students in Psychology and is Professor in the Department of Clinical Diagnosis at CMCC. His contribution to the 2009 Canadian Guidelines for Cardiac Rehabilitation made these the first national Guidelines to recognize sleep disturbances as a major risk factor for cardiovascular health. In 2019 the Ontario Ministry of Health invited Dr. Reitav to the Advisory Committee to establish Insomnia Quality Standards for health providers in the province. He is certified in Behavioral Sleep Medicine, in EMDR Therapy, attained the Diplomate in Behavioral Sleep Medicine in 2019, and was certified as a level 2 Clinical Professional in Trauma in 2022.  Putting Trauma to Sleep extends our understanding of the critical role of sleep for both mental and physical health and provides therapists with a step-by-step plan to integrate sleep repair into their clinical work.

Dr. Celeste Thirlwell is a Neuroscientist, Psychiatrist and Sleep Medicine Specialist with a background in Electrophysiology Research and Neurosurgery. She is the founder of the Sleep Wake Awareness Program (SWAP) which integrates cutting edge neuroscience-based techniques with standard sleep medicine practices. SWAP is one of the few clinics globally that analyses polysomnographic data from overnight sleep studies for Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) dysregulation. Her areas of clinical expertise include sleep instability and ANS dysfunction as they pertain to older patients with of fibromyalgia syndrome / chronic fatigue syndrome (FMS/CF), PTSD, and non-compliance with CPAP.
