What is a Psychological Associate?

In Ontario, there are two protected titles in the practice of psychology reserved exclusively for members in good standing with the College of Psychologists. They are: "psychologist" requiring a doctoral degree in psychology; and "psychological associate" requiring a master's degree in psychology and at least four years of relevant, post-degree experience.

In a similar manner to Psychologists, Psychological Associates play an important role in the following service sectors:

·       Education

·       Human resources, business, and industry

·       Corrections

·       Community care

·       Primary care, acute care hospitals, rehabilitation after serious injury or accident

·       Health promotion, long term care, chronic care, and home care

(The OPA would like to acknowledge the contributions made to this section by the British Columbia Psychology Association)
